Methods: 80 patients over 70 years old, ASA I-III, were allocated in to four groups to receive postoperative PCEA with 0.125% ropivacaine combined with sufentanil 0.3μg•ml-1, sufentanil 0.5μg•ml-1, fentanyl 3μg•ml-1 or fentanyl 5μg•ml-1, respectively, after thoracotomy or abdominal surgery under general anesthesia. The analgesic effect, drug requirement, respiratory and circulatory changes and side effects were observed for 24 hours after operation. Results: The analgesia was satisfactory in all patients. No significant respiratory and circulatory depression were found in all groups. The VAS scale during PCEA analgesia was lower in sufentanil 0.5μg•ml-1 group with less adverse effect. Conclusion: Sufentanil is suitable for postoperative PCEA in elder patients. 0.5μg•ml-1 of sufentanil combined with 0.125% ropivacaine is recommend for PCEA with continuous infusion 4ml/h, 1 ml bolus delivery and 15 minutes lockout interval.
